October Tips

• Continue to plant bulbs such as daffodils and crocus for a beautiful show next spring, Plant up pots with winter colour such as heathers, cyclamen. Pansies and Skimmia.

• Remove saucers under pots and raise pots onto pot feet to aid drainage over winter.

• Empty old summer pots and baskets and compost the contents.

• Sow broad bean seed to harvest next spring.

• Bring tender plants in for winter protection (such as canna lily) before they get killed by frost.

• Remove fallen leaves from the lawn and rake any thatch from the surface.

• Cut back plants that have flopped over pathways but leave the upright ones for wildlife.

• Clean out gutters and make sure water butts are connected and working

• Prise herbaceous plants from the ground, divide, separate and replant.

• Clean out and disinfect your greenhouse.
